How to Buy Japanese Vintage Clothing from Overseas

Japan is one of the world’s best markets for vintage denim, archive designer pieces and well-kept secondhand clothing. Here’s how to buy it from overseas and nail the fit.

Quick answer: Most is sold on Japan-only marketplaces, so use a proxy. Two make-or-break factors: sizing (Japanese sizes run small and use different labels — buy by measurements) and authenticity for designer pieces. Condition is generally excellent thanks to Japan’s secondhand culture.

Why Japan

A meticulous secondhand culture means excellent condition and honest grading, plus depth in vintage American denim, Japanese repro/selvedge denim, archive runway pieces and limited streetwear (see our denim and streetwear guides).

Sizing vs US/EU

Japanese sizing runs smaller; women’s use the 号 (go) system (9号, 11号…) and men’s cut slimmer than US. A Japanese “L” can fit like a US “M” — never buy on the size label alone.

Buy by measurements

Use flat measurements (実寸 jissun): 着丈 length, 身幅 chest (pit-to-pit), 肩幅 shoulder, 袖丈 sleeve, ウエスト waist, 股下 inseam. Compare to a garment that fits you; have a proxy ask the seller if measurements aren’t listed.

Spotting fakes

For designer/hype pieces, check labels, tags, hardware and stitching against references, favor high-rating sellers, and be wary of below-market prices.

Shipping & customs

Clothing is light but can be bulky; apparel duties can be significant in some countries. Consolidate to save. Total = item + (domestic shipping) + proxy fee + international shipping + possible customs.
