Buy Doujinshi from Japan: Proxy Guide for Overseas Fans
Doujinshi — Japan’s vast world of self-published comics, art books and indie works — is mostly sold in limited runs that never leave the country. Here’s how overseas fans track down and import the works they want.
What doujinshi is
Doujinshi (同人誌) are self-published works created by individuals or “circles” (doujin groups). They range from fan comics and original manga to art books, novels, music CDs and indie games. Print runs are often small and tied to a specific event, which makes back-catalog works genuinely scarce — and highly collectible for fans of a particular artist, series or pairing.
Where it’s sold
- Doujin events — Comiket and smaller conventions, where works debut (often the only place a run appears).
- Specialty shops — Japanese doujin retailers stock new and consignment works (online stores are Japan-facing).
- Marketplaces — Mercari, Yahoo Auctions and Rakuma for used and out-of-print copies.
How to find a specific work
Search by the circle name or artist (author) name in Japanese, plus the series, character or event. For out-of-print works, the secondhand marketplaces are usually your best bet, and a proxy can search and ask sellers about condition and contents in Japanese on your behalf.
Age restrictions & what can’t ship
Condition & shipping
Doujinshi are paper, so check for bends, foxing, water damage and writing, and ask for photos of the cover and spine. They’re light and ship cheaply, but protect them flat with rigid backing and a waterproof layer. Consolidating several into one parcel saves on shipping. Total cost = item price + (domestic shipping) + proxy fee + international shipping + possible customs.

What is doujinshi?
Self-published works (comics, art books, music, games) by independent creators and circles, sold at events like Comiket and at specialty shops.
Can adult (R-18) doujinshi be shipped internationally?
It’s 18+ and may be restricted or prohibited to import in some countries. Check your local rules; a proxy won’t buy or ship prohibited material.
Why use a proxy for doujinshi?
Most doujinshi sells only in Japan in limited runs, so a proxy sources it from Japanese shops or marketplaces and forwards it to you.
